Millennials are often described as job-hoppers, and their idea of company loyalty is much discussed. But why does a short stint have to be a bad thing? Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn co-founder and author of The Alliance, talks about the "tour of duty" concept as a way to create a mutually beneficial agreement between employees and employers that acknowledges an individual may not be long for a job or particular role. He and co-authors Ben Casnocha and Chris Yeh describe the "tour of duty" as a way to encourage employers and employees to make a significant investment in each other. The length of the tour can vary, but if you openly acknowledge both parties' intent upfront and discuss how to maximize your time together, then a short-term job commitment can actually be a win-win.
