Learning Experience Design

Learning experience design is the art and science of creating relevant, engaging, goal-oriented experiences for learners. It draws on design thinking, behavioral science and UXD principles to connect with things the learner really cares about, aiding the encoding and retrieval of knowledge.

This is not bulk information transfer, or rote memorisation of facts, but the response to the modern learner’s need for meaningful learning experiences that help them take charge of their own learning and development.

Learning experience design can involve elements of

  • Storytelling
  • Video
  • Gaming/gamification
  • Visualization
  • Hands-on or practical experience
  • Simulations
  • Digital communications
  • Portals

The benefits of learning experience design

Learning is a deeply personal thing. After all, it happens in the brain of an individual, and all individuals have different backstories, challenges and talents. A learner is more likely to absorb new information that is personal and relevant for them. Learning experience design focuses on personalization and relevance to engage employees with learning – ultimately, resulting in more engaged employees.

Bersin by Deloitte have characterized the Modern Learner as 'overwhelmed, distracted, and impatient,' requiring formats that are ‘entertaining and engaging’. Learning Experience Design zeroes in on the demands of the modern workplace as the context of learning and delivers a consumer-grade experience that meets the expectations modern learners bring to work in order to engage them more effectively.

But it is critical that they retain what they learn. Cognitive theory identifies two key processes of human memory necessary for learning: encoding and retrieval. Encoding is all about making the learner’s first encounter with a new skill or knowledge area feel relevant to them and their personal concerns: creating a memorable experience. Retrieval is about how that knowledge is remembered and applied. The evidence suggests that to repeatedly practice recalling the information is the best strategy for retention. This active retrieval promotes meaningful, long-term learning.
