If you’re like most HR pros or hiring managers, you probably believe that talking about salary with candidates is tricky business. And it can be, and this feeling has only been heightened by recently passed state laws that prohibit you from asking what candidates are making in their current jobs.
The good news is that asking them what they currently make was never good business anyway. But, you still need a plan to figure out if what you can offer salary-wise in a job will meet the candidate’s needs, and if you can afford them.
In this video, I offer a strategy called “framing”. You probably know what you want to pay and what your budget allows for. With those numbers in mind, you can use a small range to communicate what you can pay and set yourself up for closing an offer at the end of the search process.
