While working in recruiting and HR coordination, I've seen the number of employees at Jobvite almost double. Over the past two years, I watched half of our company transition from anxious candidate, to successful employee. One of the most critical steps in this transition has without a doubt been gaining awareness of the candidate and new employee experiences. Specifically, being able to positively onboard a candidate as a new employee.
Revamping the candidate-to-employee experience
When I started my role as a recruiting coordinator, I was tasked with revamping our candidate experience, starting with creating an organized checklist, enhancing communication processes, and most importantly swag! By creating a checklist for them to go to, they know exactly who they will be speaking with, what they do, and the order of the interview process. When developing a communication process, the most important part for our team was having a single point of contact. This really allowed candidates, and then eventually employees, to have a go-to person to speak with and ask questions. Finally, by greeting interviewees at the elevator with small items of swag and a little extra Jobvite info, we had really put the icing on the cake.
After a candidate has become an employee, building a well thought-out onboarding process is crucial for them to start out on the right foot. While transitioning to an HR generalist role, I came full circle from recruiting to HR. I applied similar elements from our candidate process to onboarding to give our new employees a welcoming experience. Starting with a comparable process, including greeting new employees with a desk full of swag - sweatshirt, t-shirt, mug, tumbler, pen, and journal. Making sure everything is properly communicated, between myself as the HR generalist and their new manager, they have two points of contact for any range of question. The communication process during onboarding is much more relationship-focused to gain their trust as a new employee. Finally we work with them on a personalized checklist, before hopping into their exciting projects, new hires know the inner workings of the administrative logistics beforehand. They'll not only be presented with need-to-know information, but also customized information that's specific to their role and department.
Overall, ensuring that the recruiting team provides excellent candidate experience, and that it continues into the onboarding process is essential to successfully welcome a new employee.
