David Ulrich Talks Innovation, Leadership, and Succession Planning (Video)

This summer, we hosted a VIP networking event with HR thought leader David Ulrich ahead of his keynote presentation at the AHRI National Convention in Australia.

The event provided guests with an opportunity to hear David discuss some of the principles from his new book, which he co-authored with leadership expert Norm Smallwood, "Leadership Sustainability: Seven Disciplines to Achieve the Changes Great Leaders Know They Must Make."

During his time with us, David shared some thoughts on building leadership sustainability and how leaders can turn their intentions into action.

He also sat down with us and provided valuable insight into:

Check out these videos to hear what David had to say about innovation, leadership, and succession planning.

Managing innovation and how technology is an enabler

Employee potential based on two sets of skills

Start succession planning with the requirements of the position

Leverage the right technology for the right reasons

Throughout the video, David touches on how technology can support organizations make evidence-based decisions. Think of it this way: A lot of information can be extracted from performance data. But, what is this information telling you? How do you know what to look at or what metrics are worth comparing when considering internal candidates for a promotion?

Technology has its place helping answer these important questions, but can't accomplish anything simply on its own. As we've said before, "Technology for technology's sake means nothing."

David's line of thinking is about competency management. After all, when organizations have competencies that are clearly spelled out, they are laying down the foundation on the road to success. Competencies support the behaviors needed for individuals to be successful in their roles. Technology helps facilitate the best possible outcomes.
