I’m happy to introduce Jason Mohns, one of Halogen’s new grads. In this blog post Jason reflects on his time at Halogen and his experience with the Brilliant Beginnings New Grad Program.
After completing the Computer Systems Technician program at Algonquin College, and a valuable co-op term at the Canada Revenue Agency, I was excited and more than ready to enter the workforce. My biggest challenge as a new grad? There weren’t a lot of job opportunities for people with little work experience. I needed experience to get a job but I needed a job to get the experience. It was a real Catch-22 and, frankly, I just wasn’t sure where to start.
The Brilliant Beginnings New Graduate Program at Halogen
So, here’s what changed the course of things for me. I saw a job posting for a Service Desk Support Technician at Halogen that seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. Like any enthusiastic job-seeking new grad, I went online and researched the company. That’s where I saw all the awards and recognition Halogen had received for outstanding customer service. I thought to myself, “If an organization is this dedicated to its customers, it must also take very good care of its employees.”
At that point, I didn’t know exactly what the new grad program entailed, but it really sparked my interest. I applied for the position and became really excited about the possibility of working for Halogen (I was convinced that I was the ideal person for the role). The application process was quite rigorous, consisting of multiple phone interviews, reference checks, and an in-person interview. When I was offered the job I felt like it was going to be exactly the jumpstart my career needed.
Learning on the job and in the classroom
As a Service Desk Support Technician, I’m the front line of IT support for Halogen employees. I respond to tickets by phone and email, and I help troubleshoot hardware- and software-related issues. As part of the new grad program, my time is divided — 80 percent work and 20 percent training and development.
Other new grads and I have had the opportunity to spend time in each department across the company to get a “big picture” view of the organization. We’ve also received Human Capital Strategist and Critical Thinking training. Outside of the classroom, I’ve also gained valuable career advice from senior leadership through regular mentorship meetings. With all these opportunities to develop, learn, and grow, I feel like Halogen is really investing a lot in me and setting me up for success with the company.
Connecting individual employee work to company success
Halogen really understands the value of having engaged employees and wants everyone to be happy and invested in the work they’re doing. The new grad program has helped me understand the value of my work and how it relates to Halogen’s mission and vision.
From where I’m sitting, I can see that Halogen has achieved success by focusing on delivering a great customer experience. And I know that my job is to provide the same type of experience to our employees so they can, in turn, pass it on to our customers.
I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the new grad program at Halogen. I’ve gained insight into how the organization functions and received training and learning opportunities that are helping me with my career development goals. If I had to describe the new grad experience in one word? That word would be great!
