Recently I got to sit down and chat with a bunch of Talent Acquisition Pros from around the country, from all different kinds of industries. You want to know something? All of us have the exact same issues! No, wait, I know, your industry is completely different. That’s right. Your issues are completely unique! But, they’re not.
At one point in my career I was an elementary school teacher. At lunch I got to go into the fabled ‘teacher’s lounge’ and eat my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. In the teacher’s lounge I came to find out that all teachers face the exact same issues, and the teacher’s lounge is a place for them to unload all of it! But wait, I’m a math teacher and you’re an English teacher, it must be so different. Nope. It’s crazy kids and crazy parents. It’s all the same.
Talent Acquisition, whether it’s retail, restaurants, IT, Healthcare, Manufacturing, etc., it’s all the same. We are all trying to put bumms in seats! And while our hiring processes might vary from organization to organization, those are basically the same as well. What my Talent Acquisition brothers and sisters told me was that they are all, also, keep hearing the same thing from their candidates.
Candidates want some things, and
we aren’t delivering. Here are the top 5:
- Give Me Some
‘Real’ Feedback! That’s right your
candidates want to really know why you don’t like them. And guess what?
It’s actually not illegal to tell them (unless the reason you don’t like them
is an illegal reason, then you’re just a bad person).
- Move It Along! Yeah, we aren’t trying to launch the Space Shuttle, we’re just trying to hire a back fill for Accounting. Don’t give me ‘we hire for fit crap’, the research is in, you don’t do a good job at that. Just make a hire already!
- Recruit Me. Like You Mean It! Look, I’ve got options, and all I really want is to work for an organization that really wants me. You don’t have to really value me, but at least lie to me during the hiring process and tell me I’m the best thing since sliced bread!
- Just Test Me Up Front! Don’t interview me, fall in love with me, then give me an assessment that I don’t do well on, and tell me it’s not the assessment. Just filter me out before that point. Before I get invested. Before you get invested. That break up hurts less.
- Let Me Know It’s Over! Candidate experience is really easy. The only expectation we have is for you to let us know why and let us know if it’s on, or if it’s off. We really don’t want or need that much. Do you like me? If, yes, when do I start? If no, why? Did you pick someone and I can move on? Easy.
Talent Acquisition Pros work so hard to have the best hiring process they can, given the resources they have. We all want the same things, great candidates and hiring managers who love us. We can all deliver this fairly easily, if we stop trying to make it so damn hard!
Your Turn: Have you received any helpful feedback about your hiring process from candidates?
